Outdoor Explorations (OE) has a unique mission: to make the outdoors a welcoming place to people with disabilities. Through our innovative, cooperative, and fun approach, we break down the barriers that prevent people from living life to the fullest. Our adventure, training, and community service programs enable people of all abilities to discover and value their own and others' unique strengths. OE is committed to creating communities where every person's abilities and perspectives are valued. We look to the day when all people with disabilities have access to the full range of freedom and opportunity in the world.
People with disabilities still face barriers in many aspects of their lives, and the outdoors remains inaccessible for many. OE opens a world of adventure for everyone through a variety of outdoor activities. We help people with all types of disabilities experience the outdoor freedom that others take for granted. We use adaptive equipment, a cooperative attitude, and a lot of good humor to create enjoyable, empowering adventures. Our programs build the kind of shared success in the outdoors that transforms people with and without disabilities, where barriers are broken and new abilities emerge.
Since our inception in 1991, OE has grown from a seedling project offering six trips for 32 people to a vibrant non-profit organization annually providing nearly 1,500 participants with single- and multi-day trips such as kayaking, hiking, sailing, climbing, ropes courses, whitewater rafting, snowshoeing, and backpacking. Youth and adult programs serve people with all types of disabilities, including physical, cognitive, sensory, emotional, and multiple, as well as those without disabilities. Our highly-trained program staff and corps of 70 dedicated field volunteers create one-of-a-kind experiences for people with a diverse range of needs, providing participants with year-round opportunities to challenge themselves in an accessible and supportive environment. Along with our adventure programs, OE also helps a wide range of other organizations to make their outdoor programming more inclusive through our Outdoor Inclusivity Training, and we create more accessible outdoor environments through our WildWorks community service projects.
