Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Juliette 'Daisy' Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, for a local Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Within a few years, Daisy's dream for a girl-centered organization was realized. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has a membership of nearly four million girls and adults, a significant growth from its modest beginnings nearly a century ago. In fact, more than 50 million women in the U.S. are Girl Scout alumnae.

Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama, Inc. is comprised of 30 counties in south Alabama: Autauga, Baldwin, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Chambers, Choctaw, Clarke, Coffee, Conecuh, Coosa, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Dallas, Elmore, Escambia, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Mobile, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Tallapoosa, Washington and Wilcox. Our girl membership goal for 2007-08 is 13,505 and our adult membership goal for 2007-08 is 4,500. While 78% of our girl members are in troops, 22% of girl members participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Development Program through public housing, detention centers, low-performing and under-resourced schools and Head Start.
