Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Inc.

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) was founded in 1896 when a group of dedicated women wanted to provide medical care to poor women and their children. What started as a nurse bicycling to provide care has evolved into the region's only health system exclusively for children.
CHKD's mission is to provide the highest level and quality of pediatric care in our region - a locality of seven major cities in Hampton Roads, Virginia, the Eastern Shore, and northeast North Carolina. To accomplish our mission, we provide a comprehensive array of programs and services designed to meet the needs of our community's children and families.

It is very important to respond to the changing needs of our children, families, and community. Because travel in Hampton Roads can be difficult, we are expanding the availability of outpatient care into the communities in which our families live. We are also developing new services such as sports medicine, offering minimally-invasive surgeries to help children heal faster and with less complications, and complementing state-of-the-art medical care with educational and support services like pastoral care and child life that help the entire family.

CHKD is the provider of choice for pediatric care in southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina. But with much of CHKD's care provided to children covered by government-sponsored insurance such as Medicaid and FAMIS, there are many costs that are not fully or even partially reimbursed. For this reason, we must maintain strong community relations and fundraising initiatives to communicate our value to the region and our need for support for the long-term stability of the hospital. Philanthropy is critical to ensuring that CHKD is the special place that it is for families across Hampton Roads.

The hospital's physical, occupational and speech services work to help children of all ages overcome and adapt to the challenges of developmental delay, disease or accident. Our specially-trained staff provides more than 53,000 visits each year to children throughout the region. A variety of services are tailored to meet the unique need of each child, including neuro muscular electrical stimulation to help children with swallowing and feeding issues.
