If you build it, they will come -- and swing, and climb.
That's what Boston officials are hoping will happen when a new playground is opened next year at Harambee Park in Dorchester. A program funded by CVS Caremark Corp. is donating $250,000 to the project, which will be one of 112 Boundless Playgrounds around the country -- designed to allow disabled children full access.
The current playground, part of the 46.5-acre Harambee Park in the Blue Hill Avenue area, is a maze of slides, swings, and ladders. The wood chips have worn away at the base of the metal-and-concrete structure, making the first step up a big one. The new playground, estimated to cost $685,000, will have a ground surface that can handle wheelchairs or walkers, as well as playground equipment that can be used by children with disabilities. Boundless Playgrounds is a Connecticut-based nonprofit organization that helps communities build accessible playgrounds.
"Something bigger and safer will allow our group leaders not to be hindered by who they can bring down to the playground," said Daphne Griffin, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Boston in Dorchester.
Griffin said some of the children in her program are scheduled next week to give their thoughts on what they need in a playground. "The ideal for Harambee Park is for it to become a common green for everyone to use."
